Check out our two flavors of dog food toppers and three flavors of dog treats that are grain-free (and gluten-free, too!)

Grain-free dog food, quite simply, is dog food that doesn’t contain any grains.

In recent years, grain-free dog food has become more popular, driven in part by the trend toward grain-free in people’s diets. Dog owners also often introduce grain-free dog food as a way of avoiding some of the dog food brands that use wheat gluten or corn meal as fillers in their products.

What Are Common Grains In Dog Food?
The most common grains that might be found in dog food are:

  • Wheat
  • Corn
  • Rice
  • Oats
  • Barley
  • Sorghum
  • Millet
  • Soy

Grain Allergies In Dogs
While grain allergies are rare in dogs, they do happen, and allergies can cause sensitive stomachs, digestive issues, itching, and other unpleasant conditions. If you suspect that your dog has an allergy to grains, you should check with your vet about switching to a grain-free diet. Additionally, you can try reducing the amount of grain that your dog ingests by adding grain-free dog food toppers to your dog’s dry kibble or use the toppers as an occasional meal replacement.

Replacements For Grains
Depending on the type of dry dog food or wet dog food, you might see that foods without grains in them have other types of carbohydrates, such as potatoes, yams, peas, quinoa, or lentils. The dog food manufacturer also might have just included more meat, which could lead to an excessively high-protein diet.
