About Us

We founded Portland Pet Food Company out of the need to care for our pets the same way we care for ourselves. After spending over twenty years as a health communication consultant, founder Katie McCarron turned her nutritional eye to her aging standard poodle Rosie’s diet. Unsure of what to feed finicky Rosie, who no longer enjoyed canned food and had begun to lose weight, the amount of unnatural supplements in basic dog food shocked Katie. She began to cook Rosie’s meals at home, always focusing on locally sourced, natural ingredients. Rosie regained the weight she had lost and Katie expanded on her meals and dog biscuits. Portland Pet Food Company was born!

Portland Pet Food Company believes you should feed your dog like you feed yourself. We worked with the Oregon Food Innovation Program to develop our sustainable, local, AAFCO certified line of products. We also partner with Pacific Northwest companies to ensure that 100% of your dog’s food is sourced and made in the United States. We hand roll and cut our dog biscuits and cook all meals from scratch.

Over the last two years, our delicious line of dog treats has expanded from biscuits to shelf-stable meal toppers. The first of their kind, these heat-in-the-pouch meal toppers work as dry food toppers, but smaller dogs may enjoy them all on their own! Their lightweight and easy portability make them perfect for camping, backpacking or adventuring with your pup!

About Our Products

Portland Pet Food Company cooks all dog food and treat recipes in small batches. We work out of USDA-approved commercial facilities, which is just the beginning of our quality control that assures our commitment to simple, nutritious food. We select high-quality USDA certified meat, fresh vegetables, and whole grains from local vendors. Each meal is human grade but these recipes have been formulated to meet your pet’s nutritional needs.

Simple is best, which is why you’ll always see less than 10 ingredients in each recipe. A balanced diet is one that provides adequate nutrition over a lifetime, not necessarily in one meal. So switch it up… Tuxedo’s Tender Chicken & Yams in the morning and Rosie’s Beef N' Rice in the evening.

Palatable meals make happy dogs and owners. We offer four varieties of freshly frozen dog food which is intended for a special meal, treat, intermittent or supplemental feeding. We also offer two of our meals in a shelf stable package! Suggested uses include:

-as a meal for an older dog or sick dog that refuses to eat or take its medication

-as a mixable solution to add to kibble or wet meals to add nutrition and variety

-as a meal added to a diet that offers a complete balanced diet according to AAFCO guidelines.

Our fresh batches of dog food are frozen immediately for easy storage and to maintain freshness. The food may be frozen for 6 months without use of artificial preservatives. Products containing meat, poultry, eggs, or dairy products should be thawed in the refrigerator or in the microwave oven. Any unused portion should be refrigerated immediately. The unused portions will last between 3-5 days depending upon the type of product. If you have questions about thawing food, here is a link to an excellent guideline: http://nchfp.uga.edu/how/freeze/thawing.html

Our pouch meals are shelf stable for two years. The pouch is microwaveable and unused portions may be stored in the refrigerator for 3-5 days.

Our dog biscuit treats are all natural and contain no preservatives or additives. We hand mix, roll and cut our biscuits, then bake them not once but twice to assure your pet has a dry, tasty and crunchy treat. We use exclusively Bob's Red Mill flour. The organic rye flour used in our brew biscuit treats provide a crunchy texture for your pet. The gluten and wheat-free flours used in our pumpkin and bacon biscuits assure your dog has a tasty treat without the worry of allergies to wheat or gluten.

As always speak to your vet about nutritional requirements for your dog.
