Black History Month is a time to honor and celebrate the fullness of Black History and Culture. This year’s theme, Black Health and Wellness, is about acknowledging Black scholars and medical practitioners, addressing health concerns impacting Black communities, and encouraging healing through education. It is important to honor and support Black businesses and communities throughout February, but this support should not be confined to one month of the year. We must continue to uphold these values and support throughout the year, while also understanding the power of the dollar and the variety of choices we have when we spend it. This awareness and celebration of Black History, community, and support should be something that we are continuously conscious of - that’s why Portland Pet Food Company has put together a list of Black Owned Pet Businesses in the US to Support throughout the year.

House Dogge - Sustainable Dog Product & Accessories

House Dogge (@housedogge) is a small batch eco-conscious brand out of Portland, Oregon that creates sustainable dog toys and products - such as toys, sweaters, leashes, and more! Owner and founder, Angela Medlin, started her business after learning about the toxic synthetic pet products that are used by over 80 million people worldwide. She set out to create a better quality, safer option for dogs and their owners. Medlin states, “The well-being of dogs (and the people who love them) is prioritized in these nontoxic, sustainable, and beautiful products that address both consumers holistically.” Medlin also uses her voice and platform to uplift others in her community. For each purchase made from House Dogge, a percentage of sales is donated to nonprofit organizations that are rescuing and healing health challenged, homeless, unwanted, neglected, and/or abused dogs so that they may find their caring forever home. The brand has been featured in Oprah’s Favorite Things List, Sunset, Better Homes & Gardens, Design Milk, and others.

Fresh Pawz - Streetwear For Dogs

Fresh Pawz (@freshpawz), the official streetwear brand for dogs, is a rapidly growing ecommerce company that is bridging the gap between pop culture and pet products. In 2018, owner and founder Christopher Cargnoni realized that there was something missing from the pet industry and began creating a sustainable, comfortable, and quality line of fashionable clothing for pets. Cargnoni wanted to create something that allowed their pets to be an extension of their own lifestyle and fashion, without compromising the quality and functionality that owners and pets rely on. FreshPaws quickly became the one of the first and most recognized streetwear-for-dogs brands and works to offer the best balance of variety, quality, and affordability. FreshPawz also gives back to the community by supporting the PetFinder Foundation, which provides initiatives to save adoptable pets from shelters and euthanization.
