Go Global, Eat Local with Adventure-Ready Meal Pouches
The fast-growing company leads the pack at SuperZoo 2017 with high-quality, sustainable and USA-sourced foods for health-conscious dog parents on the go.
Portland, Oregon— July 10, 2017—The first to innovate all-natural human-grade pet food, Portland Pet Food Company’s new packaging is the ultimate solution for dog owners who want to feed their dogs like they feed themselves: USA-sourced, all-natural and sustainable, no matter where they go.
The company addresses the growing trend among pet parents who travel with their pets but want them to feel as comfortable on the road as they do at home.
According to GoPetFriendly.com 2014 survey, over half of participants travel with their pets. A 2017 TripAdvisor survey underscores the importance of excellent food and supplies for your pet on the go, showing that 48% of travelers with pets care more about their pet's well being while traveling than their own.
The unique sustainable and portable packaging takes up less space in suitcases than a can of food or dry kibble would. Weighing only 9 oz., the all-natural premium dog meal toppers are perfect for camping, road trips or air travel as they are at home.
The BPA-free, recyclable pre-cooked meal pouches are ready to serve but also can be heated in a pot of water or microwaved with cool grips on the sides for safe handling. A two-year shelf life makes it economical to buy all-natural USA-sourced and made food, instead of having to throw out unused fresh food after your trip.
“Portland Pet Food Company products are game changers—founder Kate McCarron has set the bar high in the industry for crafting shelf-stable homemade meals with simple Northwest ingredients and a limited ingredient label pet owners can understand,” said Albert Bolles, PhD and nationally-recognized award-winning innovator in food technology, packaging and product development. “While all Portland Pet Food Company meals have been scientifically developed and tested, the essence of these foods did not come from a laboratory, it came from the heart and Kate’s love for her own dogs.”
Portland Pet Food Company handcrafts all dog meal and treat recipes in small batches, then packages them in shelf-stable pouches convenient for use in the home, outdoor activities and travel. All products are homemade in a quality-controlled, USDA-approved commercial facilities with nutritious and simple food at the forefront of the manufacturing process. Local vendors supply high-quality ingredients, including USDA-certified meat, fresh vegetables, and whole grains from the Pacific Northwest's remarkably diverse food supply. The company believes that simple is best –thus no more than 10 ingredients are ever combined in a recipe.
After success with Rosie’s Beef 'n Rice and Hopkins' Pork 'n Potatoes, this fall Portland Pet Food Company will expand their pouch flavor offerings to include Tuxedo's Chicken & Yams and holiday favorite Grandma Ada's Turkey & Yams.
Bringing Portland Innovation to Every Side of the Globe
Portland Pet Food Company personifies Portland’s small-scale entrepreneurial success. Founder and innovator Kate McCarron was inspired to start making her own natural, healthy dog meals when Rosie, her 14-year-old standard poodle, no longer showed interest in kibble and began to lose weight. McCarron created fresh meals with seasonal produce to entice Rosie to eat more.
McCarron noticed her dogs had more energy, shinier coats and were more eager to eat after she started cooking home-style recipes. Most importantly, Rosie regained the weight she had lost. Portland Pet Food Company, with its full line of fresh dog meals and dog treats, was born.
“Our hand-crafted food is sustainable and even our biscuits use ingredients like high-protein spent grains from some of our award-winning Portland-area breweries,” says McCarron. “We believe in rotational feeding without supplementing the natural ingredients in our diets. You wouldn't want to eat the same thing every day. Why should your dog? The new packaging offers more benefits for distributors, retail, consumers and the environment.”
Now available in two varieties of shelf-stable pre-cooked entrees intended for intermittent or supplemental feeding, suggested uses include:
- As a rotational meal or delicious topper to add nutrition and flavor variety to kibble or wet meals.
- As a soft treat or meal, especially for those who are older, struggle to eat or take medication.
- As a treat meal for an already balanced diet.
“Consumers can be rest assured that Kate is doing her best to provide the highest quality local ingredients for their pets,” said Sarah Masoni, product and process development manager at Oregon State University Food Innovation Center who helped guide meal development and food safety. “We actually tasted everything we made and found the meals to be incredibly delicious and nutritious—just what we want for our pets.”
Handcrafted in small batches, PFC's 9 oz. shelf stable pouches have an MSRP of $6.49. PPFC dog treats range from $9.99-$10.99.
