At Portland Pet Food Company, when we make chicken-flavored dog food, there’s real chicken in it, and lots of it! Human-grade, USDA-certified chicken from Cascade Farms in Oregon is the primary ingredient in our Tuxedo’s Chicken & Yams dog food meals, and there’s not much else in it, except for yams, of course.

All-natural. Healthy. Made from whole foods. No additives or preservatives. No byproducts. Limited ingredients. These are statements that we can make about our chicken and yams flavor of dog food, as well as all of our dog food meals and dog treats, none of which ever contains more than 11 ingredients.

Unfortunately, however, there’s no industry standard for “natural” labeling in dog food, a term that Purina One uses to describe its SmartBlend Chicken & Rice Formula Natural Dog Food. It would seem, however, that most people wouldn’t consider many of the ingredients listed on Purina One’s dog food label as “natural.”

Let’s take a look at some of the specific differences between PPFC dog food and Purina One dog food.

PPFC’s Tuxedo’s Chicken & Yams vs Purina One’s Chicken & Rice Formula Natural Dog Food
For a good product-to-product comparison, we looked at our Tuxedo’s Chicken & Yams vs Purina One’s SmartBlend Chicken & Rice Formula Natural Dog Food.

While Purina touts that “real chicken is the #1 ingredient” in this SmartBlend product, the dry dog food is loaded with fillers. In the first five ingredients, four of them are fillers, including chicken by-product meal. If you’re not familiar with chicken by-product, it’s made up of non-meat type parts of the chicken, such as the kidneys, lungs, feet, necks, and spleens. Chicken by-product meal is all of these rendered parts, in a dry form. None of our products ever contain by-products or rendered meats.

Ingredients In PPFC’s Tuxedo’s Chicken & Yams Dog Food
In our chicken and yams flavor of dog food, there are only 11 ingredients, all of which are natural and healthy. Here are the ingredients, in order of most prominent ingredient to least prominent ingredient:

  • Chicken (from Cascade Farms in Oregon)
  • Yams
  • Long Grain White Rice
  • Chicken Gizzards
  • Eggs
  • Potato Flour
  • Vegetable Oil
  • Quinoa
  • Kale
  • Eggshell (a great source of calcium)
  • Sea Salt

You’ll notice that in our chicken and yams flavor, as with all of our flavors of dog food, there are no preservatives, no growth hormones, no artificial coloring (or artificial anything) and no BHA or BHT (preservatives that are found in many types of dog food).

Ingredients In Purina One’s SmartBlend Chicken & Rice Formula Natural Dog Food
In Purina One’s chicken and rice flavor, the advertising copy on the bag of dry dog food proclaims that it’s “natural with added vitamins, minerals, and nutrients.” As with many other well-known brands of dog food, that type of verbiage indicates that there are, in fact, synthetic ingredients in the food. In this particular instance, there are 40 ingredients in Purina One’s food, many of which aren’t natural. Here are the ingredients, in order of most prominent ingredient to least prominent ingredient:
