At Portland Pet Food Company, we’re proud to make some of the healthiest dog food on the planet, with human grade, whole foods!

None of our dog food meals or dog treats has more than 11 ingredients in it, and some have just 5 ingredients, which means that all of them are considered “limited ingredients.”

Unfortunately, however, there’s no industry standard for “limited ingredients” labeling in dog food, and Nutro’s Adult Fish & Potato Recipe, which is marketed as a “Limited Ingredient Diet,” actually has 29 ingredients in it.

Let’s take a look at some of the other differences between PPFC dog food and Nutro dog food.

PPFC’s Wally’s Salmon N’ Rice vs Nutro’s Limited Ingredient Adult Fish & Potato Recipe
For a good product-to-product comparison, we looked at our new flavor of dog food meals, Wally’s Salmon N’ Rice, vs Nutro’s Adult Fish and Potato Recipe.

The fish in our salmon and rice flavor of dog food is Northwest wild-caught salmon – sourced, like most of our ingredients, from near our headquarters in Portland, Oregon. Nutro’s dog food source is “fish,” but the type of fish isn’t specified, only that it’s “farm-raised.”

Ingredients In PPFC’s Wally’s Salmon N’ Rice Dog Food
In our salmon and rice flavor of dog food, there are only 10 ingredients, all of which are natural and healthy. Here are the ingredients, in order of most prominent ingredient to least prominent ingredient:

  • Salmon (caught in the wild, in the Northwest US)
  • Carrots
  • Peas
  • Brown Rice
  • Spinach
  • Eggs
  • Vegetable Oil
  • Potato Flours
  • Eggshell (a great source of calcium)
  • Sea Salt

Notably, in our salmon and rice flavor, as well as all of our flavors of dog food, there are no rendered meats, no preservatives, no growth hormones, no artificial coloring (or artificial anything) and no BHA or BHT (preservatives that are found in many types of dog food).

Ingredients In Nutro’s Limited Ingredients Adult Fish & Potato Recipe
In Nutro’s potato and rice flavor, the label on the canned dog food shows that there are “5 Key Ingredient Sources,” but follow the asterisk, and you’ll see “Plus Vitamins, Minerals and Other Nutrients.” And that’s how you go from 5 ingredients, to 29 ingredients. Here are the ingredients, in order of most prominent ingredient to least prominent ingredient:

  • Fish
  • Whole Potatoes
  • Water
  • Dried Potatoes
  • Potato Protein
  • Sunflower Oil (preserved with Mixed Tocopherols)
  • Carrageenan
  • Guar Gum
  • Potassium Chloride
  • DL-Methionine
  • Choline Chloride
  • Calcium Carbonate
  • Ferrous Sulfate
  • Magnesium Sulfate
  • L-Ascorbyl-2-Polyphosphate
  • Zinc Oxide
  • Vitamin E Supplement
  • Thiamine Mononitrate
  • Copper Proteinate
  • Sodium Selenite
  • Manganese Sulfate
  • D-Calcium Pantothenate
  • Vitamin A Supplement
  • Potassium Iodide
  • Biotin
  • Riboflavin Supplement
  • Vitamin B12 Supplement
  • Pyridoxine Hydrochloride
  • Vitamin D3 Supplement

As a rule of thumb, any time you read verbiage on a dog food label such as “Made with natural ingredients, plus vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients,” you need to be aware that there are synthetic ingredients in the dog food.

Protein Comparisons for PPFC vs Nutro
Pet food labels are required to state guarantees for the minimum percentages of “crude proteins.” Crude might seem like an off-putting term, but it simply explains the method that went into testing the product in the dog food, not the quality of the product itself.

Our salmon and rice flavor contains a minimum of 11% crude protein, compared with the minimum of 7% crude protein that’s found in Nutro’s fish and potato flavor – meaning there’s more protein per bite in Wally’s.

Dog Food Pouch vs Dog Food Can
All of our dog food meals, including our salmon and rice flavor, come in meal pouches that have a shelf-stable life of two years. Because the dog food is gently cooked inside the meal pouch, the process locks in the nutrients of the whole food ingredients that we use, which is why we never have to add preservatives. Nutro’s fish and potato flavor is a canned, wet dog food, with a variety of preservatives.

Non-GMO Ingredient Comparisons
Our salmon and rice flavor of dog food and Nutro’s fish and potato flavor of dog food are both made with non-GMO ingredients (which means that the ingredients are from crops that haven’t been genetically modified).
